Magma – International short film festival
Competition Announcement 2008

The Cultural Organization Scarti with the participation of Regione Siciliana, Provincia
Regionale di Catania and Comune di Acireale, organizes the 7th edition of Magma –
International Short Film Festival

1) The Festival is opened to directors and works coming from all around the world and
will take place in Acireale -Italy from September 8th -2008 to September 14th – 2008

2) To participate it is necessary to send a DVD copy of the short-film together with a
copy of the application form up to 1st JUNE 2008. Application forms should be sent

3) The shorts will be selected by a committee of members of the SCARTI Cultural
Organization. The copies sent for preselection will not be sent back to the authors.
These copies will remain in the Archives of the SCARTI Cultural Organization,
available to be referred to for the sole aim of study, of cataloguing and as reference
material for other festivals. They will also be made available for any possible
repetition of the event.

4) Besides sending a copy of the short-film, the participants must fill in the
application form which is available on the web-site www.magmafestival.org,
and send to the e-mail address selezioni@magmafestival.org a photo of the
author and one of the film’s scenes. The sending of these pictures implies the
automatic authorization to their free publication in the catalogue and for any other
promotional use.

5) The short films that lack the aforementioned documentation may not be admitted to
the selection.

6) The selected candidates will be informed of their selection before 20th June. The
selected candidates must send before July 10th a copy of their work in DVD PAL,
MiniDv PAL (no DvCam) or in reel (35mm, 16mm, 8mm.). The copies in reel
format will be sent back to the authors at the end of the festival. Every copy must
be in PAL format, otherwise (NTSC, Secam) it won’t be admitted to the
selection.

7) The postage costs of the copies for the pre-selection and the projection are paid for
by the candidate. The return postage costs of the copies in reel format will be paid
for by the organization.

.8) The Cultural Organisation SCARTI commits itself to safekeeping received works,
but cannot be held responsible for any theft, damage or loss that may occur in
between the time of their receipt and their return to the sender. Likewise, the
Organisation is not responsible for any damage and/or loss that may occur whilst in
transit

9) The festival is made up of 4 sections :
a. Short-film Narrative
b. Short-film Documentary
c. Short-film Experimental
d. Short-film Animation

The maximum length for each film is 20 minutes.

10) The date of production of the work must not be before January 2006.

11) Each author may submit several short-films. However, only one film can be
submitted per section.

12) Each author is responsible for the content of their own works.

13) The short films which are not in Italian must be subtitled in English or in
Italian.

14) Each short-film must be provided with a paper-copy of the dialogues. The shortfilms
that lack the aforementioned conditions at points 13 and 14, may be
disregarded at the pre-selection.

15) Festival Management preserves the right to use fragments of the films (max. 45
seconds) for the Festival advertising purposes.

16) The participation in the festival is free, except for the postage costs of the materials
that are paid for by the candidate. In no case the postage will be refunded by the
organization.

17) Subject to the festival budget, the directors of the selected films will be invited to
participate in Magma 2008.
The Festival Management will assume booking and accommodation costs. Travel
expenses will be paid by participants themselves.

18) Before the festival starts, a program of the selected short-films will be published on
the Festival’s official website. The projected shorts will be subjected to a jury which
will award the LORENZO VECCHIO AWARD to the short-film winner of MAGMA.

19) Furthermore, the Jury will award a mention to the best short-film of each section.

20) With the authors ‘ authorization, a selection of short films submitted to Magma will
be distributed, after the end of the festival, through a network of three partner
festivals. The organization will provide the list of friends festivals before the
beginning of our event.

21) Copies of the films coming from non-member countries of the European Union
must be provided of the inscription “Without commercial value. For the sole aim of
culture” or of a similar one.

22) Under no circumstances can the received short-films be withdrawn from the
Festival.

23) The application form to Magma – International Short Film Festival implies the full
and unreservedly acceptance of the indicated rules.

24) It’s for the management of the Festival to pass sentence about any contrasting
case and about any other case which is not explicitly provided for by this rules. For
any other case the competent Court is that of Catania; and only the Italian version
of this rules is valid.
