Magma Film Festival

The eighteenth edition takes place between Acireale and Catania from 19 to 23 November 2019.

On Tuesday, November 19th Franco Maresco presents the controversial film “La mafia non è più quella di una volta” (Special Jury Prize at Venezia 2019), after chairing the jury of Magma 2018.

On Wednesday 20th in Cinema Odeon (Catania) is launched the first edition of Insula– Impressions of Sicily, special competitive section with short films made by Sicilian directors or set in Sicily. Then, a tribute to music with video clips by Cinepila and Cesare Basile’s live songs.

On Thursday 21st at Ristorante “La Chiazzetta” (Acireale) takes shape Food Visions, a multisensorial projection-based dinner show in which food and cinema will come together as an inseparable combination.

On Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd the International Competition runs with 23 films from 13 countries of the world, selected among 950 entries from all over the world.

The short film Détours, directed by the Belgian Christopher Yates, wins the Lorenzo Vecchio Award “for the original way to turn a simple obstacle into a contemporary epic, narrating the amusing and unexpected human behaviour”, as declared by the Jury . Special mentions for the Swedish The traffic separating device by Jonah Palmgren “ for the original way to turn a simple obstacle into a contemporary epic, narrating the amusing and unexpected human behaviour”; for the PolishYou are overreacting by Karina Paciorkowskafor the provoking strength of the animation, which highlights a shocking normalisation of misogynous stereotypes deeply-rooted in the contemporary society”; for the Spanish (F)our Seasons by Miguél Gabaldòn “for the ability to move the audience without the use of words, giving way to the imagination”.

The Audience Award goes to You Are Overreacting by Karina Paciorkowska.

The 2019 Jury is chaired by the editor and director Jacopo Quadri and also composed by the DOP Paolo Ferrari and from the director of International Sales of Cornerstone Films Carla Quarto di Palo.
